The pursuit of the Department of Medicine (and some related others) is highly favored in Taiwanese society. Teenagers study incredibly for being doctors in order to pursue higher social position. Academically well-performing students are strongly encouraged to set the National Taiwan University's Department of Medicine as their first choice. However, the Ministry of Education dislikes science class students majoring in Medicine, since it is not considered an elementary Science subject and disobeys the original intent of the program. Too many Medicine majors could implicitly lead to less quota for new students in the near future.
